The feedback from the scoresheets for WEEK 9 was as follows:
SCORES:
Winners:
9: Lofthouse Lions, Olde Taverners
8: Carleton Grangers, Kippax British Legion, The Vic
7: Kippax Legionnaires
Non-winners:
8: Flanagan’s Army
7: Featherstone Phoenix, Golden Lion Dudes, Olde Tavern Allsorts, The Other Team
COMMENTS:
Carleton Grangers: Very, very good game. Demanding quiz played to a high standard.
Flanagan’s Army: A good quiz against excellent opponents.
The Vic: Good evening against a pleasant team. Subjects OK. Balance OK.
Golden Lion Dudes: Beat fair and square. Good team, The Vic.
Featherstone Phoenix (v Kippax British Legion): Mix of questions could have been a little better, but good quiz & great opponents.
Olde Taverners: Good balanced questions, interesting rounds.
The Other Team: Interesting mixture.
Lofthouse Lions: Another good set.
STATISTICS:
The numbers of questions remaining unanswered (by either team) in rounds 1/2/4/7/9/10 were as follows (in the 6 matches, expressed as A-B):
0-1
4-3
6-4
6-4
9-7
7-9
32-28 (Total)
This suggests a pretty well balanced quiz, confirming some of the comments above.
Split by rounds instead of matches, the same unanswered questions break down as:
1-7 (Christianity)
9-5 (Ancient Romans)
6-8 (Comic strips)
5-1 (General Knowledge)
10-5 (London)
1-2 (Science fiction)
This suggests the balances within each round were less good than the overall balance. Nobody swapped at half-time this week, but this would have turned the 32-28 total into 36-24, to the disadvantage of a team swapping from B to A.
Only one answer was not got by anyone in the FTQL:
Pyx (vessel in which Communion bread is carried)
This caused a lot of post-quiz debate. The key word appears to be (the slightly ambiguous) ‘carried’, as it refers to carrying bread to the sick rather than merely holding it (in the latter case, ciborium and monstrance are equally good answers).
The above question was the only one not answered correctly in the Olde Tavern Allsorts/Lofthouse Lions match. Taking into account the individual and written rounds too, the only other question that Lions failed to answer correctly when they had chance was one of the smartphone companies in round 5. That match created a new record aggregate of 171 points, beating two other Lions matches from this season by one point.
