Neil's Weekly Question Round-Up - Week 6

The feedback from the scoresheets for WEEK 6 was as follows:

SCORES:

Winners:

9: Thatched House

7: Carleton Grangers, Flanagan’s Army, Golden Lion Dudes, Kippax Legionnaires, Olde Tavern Allsorts

Non-winners:

8: Kippax British Legion, The Other Team, The Vic

4: Featherstone Phoenix

3: Olde Taverners

It’s curious that five teams awarded a score of 7 and all of them were winners, whilst three teams awarded a score of 8 and all of them were non-winners.

COMMENTS:

Golden Lion Dudes: I think some of the questions was badly worded i.e. Helen Fielding.

[This one asked for the former journalist who chronicled the title character’s calorie/cigarette battles in Bridget Jones’ Diary, almost as though the answer was somebody other than her creator, Helen Fielding.]

Olde Taverners: Questions unbalanced. Two history rounds after two history rounds last week. General Knowledge AGAIN. Quite a few questions badly worded.

[‘Kings and Queens’ and ‘History of Food & Drink’ were two of the rounds, and for the third time this season there was a team round entitled ‘General Knowledge’ (one more than the number of sport-related rounds!). And for a balance analysis, see below.]

Flanagan’s Army: Westeros & Essos!!!

[The setter had done a sort of Spoonerism on the two continents in Game of Thrones, calling them Wessos and Esteros.]

Featherstone Phoenix: The capitals question was ambiguous. Big discrepancy between A & B.

[The four nearest capitals to London were asked for, without specifying that it was sovereign nations, thus Cardiff etc. didn’t count.]

Olde Tavern Allsorts: Good game!

Kippax British Legion: Excellent quiz. Round 3 question A4 slightly misleading wording.

[The Helen Fielding question again.]

Carleton Grangers: Yet more history subjects!

The Vic: Enjoyable, interesting subjects.

Kippax Legionnaires: Close! To start with.

[The Legionnaires beat King’s Arms 82-65, but for the first eight rounds there were never more than 6 points in it.]

Thatched House: Another good set.

STATISTICS:

The numbers of questions remaining unanswered (by either team) in rounds 1/2/4/7/9/10 were as follows (in the 6 matches, expressed as A-B):

1-4

2-3

1-6

5-5

4-8

5-8

18-34 (Total)

This vindicates the comments about balance above, which were both made by teams playing ‘B’.

Split by rounds instead of matches, the same unanswered questions break down as:

3-12 (Wales)

2-2 (TV shows)

4-10 (Greek myth)

3-5 (General Knowledge)

2-4 (Kings and Queens)

4-1 (History of Food & Drink)

So the first half showed more favouring of ‘A’ than the second half, which ended with a round that bucked the trend.

There were three answers not got by anyone in the FTQL on the night, and given the above figures it’s no surprise that they were ‘B’ questions in the Wales and Greek myth rounds:

Flint (Edward I’s first Welsh castle)

Abergavenny (‘Gateway to Wales’ surrounded by mountains)

Acheron (‘River of sorrow’ in Hades)
