Neil's Weekly Question Round-Up - Week 17

The feedback from the scoresheets for WEEK 17 was as follows:

SCORES:

Winners:

9: Lofthouse Lions

8: Flanagan’s Army, Kippax Legionnaires, Olde Taverners

7: Golden Lion Dudes, Olde Tavern Allsorts

Non-winners:

9: Carleton Grangers

8: The Other Team, The Vic

7: Featherstone Phoenix, Kippax British Legion

In the five matches where both teams gave a score, they both gave the same score – perhaps a sign of satisfaction with the quiz?

COMMENTS:

Olde Taverners: Interesting rounds. Overall balance was good but individual rounds were unbalanced.

The Vic: Good quiz. Subjects and questions excellent.

[See below regarding balance.]

Flanagan’s Army: A decent quiz, varied subjects.

The Other Team: Really enjoyed playing our hosts.

Olde Tavern Allsorts: Comice not cornice, but didn’t cause an issue.

Featherstone Phoenix: Poetry again!

[The comice/cornice misprint wasn’t a problem in any games, as all six players involved got the question right for 2 points.]

Lofthouse Lions: Great game all round.

Carleton Grangers: Very enjoyable. Good quiz; good spirit.

[Lofthouse were in the unusual position of being behind at half-time and able to swap. They duly did so (to ‘A’), and ultimately won by 1 point.]

Golden Lion Dudes: Not too bad.

STATISTICS:

The numbers of questions remaining unanswered (by either team) in rounds 1/2/4/7/9/10 were as follows (in the 6 matches, expressed as A-B):

1-1

4-4

4-5

6-4

5-7

8-5

28-26 (Total)

This bears out the Olde Taverners’ comment that it was a good overall balance. They also commented that the individual rounds were unbalanced. Round 3 saw 18 ‘A’ players score 2 points and 15 ‘B’ players score 2 points. That suggests a reasonable balance, but there was a big imbalance at question 4 (as big as it could be), with all six A4 players getting the Nietzsche question right and all six B4 players getting the Faun question wrong.

Split by rounds instead of matches, the same unanswered questions break down as:

9-0 (Crime and criminals)

1-5 (Films of the 1980s)

5-6 (Poems and poets)

5-10 (Europe)

3-4 (Science and nature)

5-1 (Football teams)

Despite the good overall balance, there are some big differences seen above.

There were no answers not got by anyone in the FTQL. So, just like last week, here are the two questions not got in the Lofthouse/Carleton match, and the teams that did get them:

Lisbon (main transport hub is Gare do Oriente): Kippax Legionnaires and both Olde Tavern teams

Livorno (home of Italian Naval Academy): Kippax British Legion

Given that one is looking for a capital where they speak a Spanish-like language and the main direction of travel is to the east, Lisbon is perhaps a surprising miss?!
